Belonging Anew (2014)
"Belonging Anew" is a self exploratory journey in the realm of fear, identity and belonging. It is a portrait series of young women who, like me, are going through the life changing, emotionally packed experience of moving to a new place (be it town or country) to live and study.
I chose to photograph the girls against a neutral white backdrop in an attempt to represent the clean slate you get when you move to a new place. Simultaneously, by eliminating any distractions in the background I aimed to concentrate the attention of the viewer to the person, whose expressions and strained, uncomfortable body language depicts the worries and anxieties that go hand in hand with new beginnings and major lifestyle changes.
I asked each girl to think about her biggest fear while I photographed them, in attempt to capture the emotional state even the thought or memory of fear can evoke.
